Massena and the outlying area of Massena Springs are defined by the convergence of industrial power and the international border along the Saint Lawrence Seaway. This landscape is heavily shaped by water management, notably the Massena Power Canal which diverts water to the town's industrial core. To the north, the massive expanse of Lake Saint Lawrence contains Croil Island and the Long Sault Islands, marking the boundary between the United States and Canada.
