Matterhorn Peak dominates this high-altitude landscape in the Sierra Nevada, anchoring a network of sharp divides and glacial basins. The terrain is defined by dramatic elevation changes, from the heights of Sawtooth Ridge and Kettle Peak to the deep depressions of Rock Canyon and Slide Canyon. Water is a constant presence, pooled in numerous alpine catchments such as Peeler Lake, Smedberg Lake, and Rock Island Lake.
