Yosemite National Park and the Toiyabe National Forest meet along the high jagged ridges of the Sierra Nevada, where the boundary between Mono and Tuolumne counties follows the crest. The Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail winds through the southern half of the area, crossing near Smedberg Lake and Benson Pass. This high-altitude landscape is defined by its dramatic glacial features, including the sharp granite of Matterhorn Peak and the deep troughs of Matterhorn Canyon and Virginia Canyon.
