Merriam Crater and Merriam Mtn dominate this volcanic landscape within the Coconino National Forest. This section of northern Arizona is defined by a concentrated field of cinder cones and volcanic features, including North Sheba Crater, South Sheba Crater, and the uniquely named The Sproul. Settlement in the area is sparse, primarily concentrated in the Alpine Ranches development. The network of desert roads, such as Leupp Rd and Grandfalls Rd, provides access across the arid terrain. Natural drainage is marked by the San Francisco Wash and ephemeral water sources like the Rio de Flag Trick Tank and Cone Water Tank, highlighting the importance of water management in this high-altitude environment.
