The Appalachian National Scenic Trail winds through the northern elevations of this Berkshire County landscape, crossing Cobble Hill and descending toward the Tyringham Valley. The southern portion of the map is defined by the high-elevation wetlands and reservoirs of the Berkshire Hills, including the Morley Swamp Reservoir and Abbey Lake. Genealogical interest is centered near Monterey, where the Old Center Cem and Woods Cem are located near the shores of Lake Garfield. This area shows a distinct transition from the narrow agricultural bottomlands along Hop Brook in the north to the more complex water management systems of the south, exemplified by the Berkshire Trout Hatchery and numerous named swamps like Hale Swamp and Angerman Swamp.
