About this map

Montreat and its surrounding peaks define this landscape at the eastern edge of Buncombe County during the mid-1990s. The settlement pattern is largely dictated by the high-elevation terrain of the Pisgah National Forest and the Asheville Watershed, where the massive Burnett Reservoir captures the flow of the North Fork Swannanoa River. To the south, the community of Black Mountain sits near the historical site of Black Mountain College, while scattered rural features like Mt View Church and Homers Chapel indicate the established social fabric of the valley.
