The Kern River carves through the northwestern corner of this territory, where Route 178 follows its steep canyon walls. Much of the landscape is defined by the high elevations of the Sierra Nevada and the protected lands of the Sequoia National Forest. Named high-country basins such as Cow Flat, Hoosier Flat, and Pine Flat indicate the unique topography of these mountains, where relatively level meadows sit perched between ridges. The drainage network is complex, featuring numerous named watercourses like Rattlesnake Cr and the various forks of N Fork Cottonwood Cr.
