About this map

Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park protects a coastline defined by volcanic activity and dramatic elevation changes. The landscape is dominated by the Kamo'oali'i Lava Flow and the towering Kūkalau'ula Pali, which drops toward the Pacific Ocean. This modern survey illustrates the intersection of protected wilderness areas and traditional landmarks along the shore. Much of the inland area is designated as the Hawai'i Volcanoes Wilderness, where the Ka'aha Trl provides a rare point of access through the terrain. Coastal features such as Nali'ikakani Point, Papalehau Point, and Nāpu'uonā'elemākule mark the rugged transition between the lava fields and the sea, reflecting the ongoing geological evolution of the Big Island.
