Waterloo and the surrounding desert plains of Luna County are defined by the stark rise of the Tres Hermanas Mountains in the south and the high elevations of the North Peak area. The settlement pattern here is sparse, centered on isolated ranching infrastructure and a network of secondary roads such as Homestead Rd and Inmon Ranch Rd SE. The landscape is etched with ephemeral drainages including Seventysix Draw and Big Tank Draw, which channel seasonal water through the arid terrain.
