About this map

The Machias River carves a winding path through this corner of Washington County, defining a landscape shaped by water and timber. The river's course is punctuated by navigational landmarks such as Lower Wigwam Rapids, Upper Wigwam Rapids, and the cascades at Holmes Falls. To the south, the terrain rises toward Peaked Mtn, which overlooks the secluded Peaked Mountain Pond and the surrounding marshlands of Grassy Pond. Sparse road networks like Bear Brk Rd and Guptill Rd provide the only terrestrial access to these interior woodlands. Along the eastern edge, the river system slows at Rivers End and transitions into the meandering turns of The Oxbow on the Chandler River, illustrating the complex drainage patterns of the Maine north woods.
