About this map

The Mississippi River dictates the entire layout of this coastal landscape, where narrow strips of habitable land are flanked by the vast wetlands of Plaquemines Parish. In the late nineteenth century, settlement clung tightly to the river levees, served by the New Orleans and Gulf Railroad on the east bank and the New Orleans Ft. Jackson and Grand Isle Railroad on the west. This transportation corridor connected small riverfront communities like St. Sophie Monticello, Myrtle Grove, and Pointe Celeste to regional markets.
