Putnam Lake sits as the central hydrologic feature of this drainage-carved landscape in northern Montana. The terrain is defined by a series of coulees and creeks that slice through the high plains, including Saint Johns Coulee and Fogarty Coulee to the north, and Suction Cr which feeds toward the lake from the southwest. To the south, the elevation rises sharply toward Putnam Ridge and the distinct formation of Haystack Butte, providing clear topographic markers for the surrounding country.
