Rito Alto Peak and the high ridges of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains form a dramatic natural boundary between Saguache and Custer counties. This 2019 survey captures a landscape defined by glacial cirques and alpine basins, where numerous high-altitude water bodies like San Isabel Lake, Eureka Lake, and South Crestone Lake feed the headwaters of the regional creek system. The rugged topography is crossed by several primitive routes, including the ascent to Hermit Pass near Hermit Peak.
