Saddle Butte dominates the central-eastern landscape of this high desert region in Malheur County, standing as a prominent topographic landmark above the surrounding volcanic terrain. The volcanic history of the area is further evidenced by the Saddle Butte Lava Field, which extends across the southeastern corner of the quadrangle. Drainage for this arid environment is provided by seasonal watercourses, including Ryegrass Creek in the south and Bull Creek in the northeast. Human passage through this portion of the Oregon desert is primarily facilitated by Iron Mountain Rd, which skirts the southwestern boundary. The map provides a detailed look at the Public Land Survey System divisions, documenting the grid across T28S through T30S and R38E through R39E as they intersect with these geologic formations.
