Mount Baker National Forest defines the geography of this North Cascades terrain, where high-elevation summits and alpine lakes dominate the landscape. The steep ascent to Sauk Mountain and nearby Sauk Mtn overlooks a network of glacial and snowmelt features, including Sauk Lake and Bald Lake. The drainage patterns are well-defined by numerous watercourses such as Thunder Cr, Jackman Cr, and Rocky Cr, which flow through the deep valleys of Jackman Ridge and the Helen Buttes.
