1981 Map of Sheep Mountain

USGS Topo · Published 1982

About this map

Sheep Mountain anchors this high-desert terrain within the restricted boundaries of the White Sands Missile Range. The landscape is defined by its arid hydrology and rugged relief, where critical water sources like Sheep Mountain Spring, Mexican Hat Spring, and South Well dictated human presence and movement through the canyons. Topographical features such as Lava Gap and Sly Gap mark the natural corridors between the peaks, while evidence of mineral interest appears in several Mines and a Mine located along the western slopes of the central massif. The eastern portion of the survey is dominated by the alluvial drainage of Salt Creek, illustrating the stark transition from the mountain heights to the flats of the missile range during the early 1980s.
