The Salmon River carves through the northern reaches of this Idaho wilderness, where the Salmon Wild And Scenic River corridor meets the high ridges of the Frank Church-River Of No Return Wilderness. Named riverside benches like Fall Creek Bar, Widow Bar, and Groundhog Bar suggest the historical importance of these rare flat landing spots along the river's treacherous course, punctuated by the Growler Rapids.

Away from the water, the landscape is defined by high-elevation features such as Sheepeater Mtn and the broad Chamberlain Basin. A network of backcountry routes, including the Three Blaze Trl and Richardson Creek Trl, provides the primary access through the Payette National Forest and Nez Perce National Forest.
