Sherwood Peak rises above a landscape defined by the intricate drainages of the S Fork Eel River and the headwaters of the Ten Mile River system. In this northern coastal range environment, the 2012 topography shows a pattern of high ridges and isolated homesteads, including Clarke Ranch and Baxman Ranch. This area of Mendocino County is marked by distinctive clearings or natural glades known locally as openings, such as Ames Opening and Case Opening, which provide breaks in the heavy timber of the surrounding peaks like Strong Mountain and Brush Mountain. The road network is largely comprised of long-established routes like the Fort Bragg-Sherwood Rd and Stagecoach Rd, tracing the high ground of Sherwood Ridge and Smith Ridge to navigate the steep canyons of Middle Fork Ten Mile River and Redwood Cr.
