The Santa Ana Mountains and Santa Margarita Mountains dominate this region at the intersection of Orange, Riverside, and San Diego counties. This wilderness area, largely contained within the Cleveland National Forest and the northern reaches of MCB Camp Pendleton, is defined by a network of high-elevation meadows known as potreros. Land use is characterized by rugged drainage basins like San Mateo Canyon and Bluewater Canyon, which channel seasonal water toward the coast.
