Seattle and its burgeoning satellite communities are captured during a period of rapid expansion in the late nineteenth century. The landscape is defined by the complex waterways of the Puget Sound, from Possession Sound and Port Gardner in the north down to the shoreline of Vashon Id. and Blake Id. in the south. The city's northern edge is anchored by the military presence at Ft. Lawton, while the interior reveals a network of early railroad infrastructure. The Northern Pacific R. R. and the Seattle Lake Shore and Eastern Railway provide the vital links between the timber-rich shores of Lake Washington and the industrial hubs developing at Snohomish and Everett.
