Standhope Peak and Pioneer Mtn dominate this high-elevation landscape along the boundary of Custer and Blaine Counties. The terrain is characterized by dramatic glacial features, including the Dry Canyon, Broad Canyon, and the high-alpine Surprise Valley. A series of mountain lakes are scattered across the peaks, such as Angel Lake, Betty Lake, and Baptie Lake, which feed the headwaters of the Little Wood River and several forks of Wildhorse Creek. This 2013 survey illustrates the shared management of the wilderness between Challis National Forest and Sawtooth National Forest. The map provides a detailed view of the drainage patterns from Left Fork Fall Creek to Laidlaw Creek, showing how the hydrology of the Pioneer Mountains shapes this remote Idaho backcountry.
