Thumb Lake and the surrounding glacial terrain of Chandler Hills define this part of northern Michigan, where high ridges meet a complex network of wetlands and headwaters. The landscape is a critical hydrological divide, giving rise to the N Br Boyne River flowing west and the W Br Sturgeon River extending east. Modern recreation is woven into this physical geography via the N Country National Scenic Trail and the Iron Belle Trail, which traverse the elevated ground near Thunder Mtn.
