White Sands Missile Range dominates the eastern half of this terrain, where the desert floor meets the steep rise of the San Andres Mountains. The landscape is defined by deep incisions and sharp peaks, most notably Mount Baldy and Lone Star Peak in the north. This high-altitude desert environment is marked by numerous drainages including White Rock Canyon, Rhodes Canyon, and Makinson Canyon, which funnel seasonal runoff toward the flats below.
