Tired Horse Butte and Pilot Butte rise above a landscape defined by seasonal water sources and the distinct volcanic geography of Lake County. This area of central Oregon, surveyed in 2017, reveals a complex network of artificial and natural catchments essential for life in the high desert. Significant features include the Stauffer Reservoir and Wagontire Mountain Reservoir, alongside smaller points like the E Immigrant Waterhole. The topography shifts from the expansive level of Overall Flat to the dramatic edge of Stauffer Rim. To the east, the Sinks of Lost Creek indicates a drainage system typical of the region's basin-and-range geology, where surface water often disappears into the porous earth before reaching a major river. These water points, including Juniper Lake Reservoir and Pilot Lake Reservoir, remain critical landmarks for modern ranching and land management.
