Olympic National Park occupies the eastern and southern reaches of this landscape, where the Olympic Mountains rise above a dense network of coastal rivers and creeks. The drainage patterns of the Sooes River and Big River define the terrain, supported by numerous tributaries including Umbrella Cr and Trout Cr. Human settlement is sparse and concentrated along the primary corridors of Hoko Ozette Rd and Ozette Rd, characterized by established homesteads such as Wesseler Ranch, Iverson Ranch, and Person Ranch. The small settlement of Royal sits near the confluence of the Big River and Palmquest Rd, serving as a rare point of concentration in a region otherwise dominated by timberlands and protected wilderness. Notable high points like Snag Peak overlook the central valley, which is punctuated by the secluded Elk Lake.
