Umcolcus Lake dominates the central landscape of this wilderness area at the boundary of Penobscot and Aroostook counties. The terrain is defined by a dense network of waterways feeding into the lake, including East Branch Umcolcus Stream and Cut Brook. High ground is marked by Yerxa Ridge to the northeast and Oak Hill near the northern border, providing a clear view of the complex drainage patterns that include Beaver Pond and Black Cat Pond. This 2018 survey illustrates a region primarily accessed via logging routes such as Grand Lake Rd and Boody Brook Rd. The presence of Wadleigh Bog in the south underscores the low-lying, saturated nature of the local geography between the ridges.
