Grand Mesa National Forest defines the southern half of this modern terrain study, where the high-altitude landscape is shaped by the headwaters of numerous creeks and the presence of the Vega Reservoir. The northern portion features agricultural and water-management infrastructure like the Erie Canal, which cuts through the terrain near Swede Flats and Kirkendall Flats. This network of canals and reservoirs indicates the critical importance of water diversion for the high plateaus above Plateau Creek.
