Albemarle Sound and the Pasquotank River dominate this coastal landscape, where the Intracoastal Waterway cuts a straight course through the brackish waters. The eastern shoreline of Camden County is defined by a series of low-lying points and marshy reaches, including Wade Point, Miles Point, and Poquoson Point, with extensive wetlands such as Black Swamp and Gray Swamp stretching inland.

Settlement is concentrated along the narrow peninsula between the river and the sound, centered on the community of Old Trap. This area contains a significant concentration of small family burial grounds and historical markers, such as the Stephen Delon Family Cem, Pugh and Mitchell Cem, and the Banks - Fletcher - Lowry - Morse Cem. These sites, along with the Wesley United Methodist Church Cem, provide a detailed record of the long-standing family lineages that have farmed and fished these shorelines for generations.
