The Mojave National Preserve occupies the western portion of this 2018 survey, representing a protected expanse of the eastern Mojave Desert. The landscape is defined by the gradual transition from the high ground of the Piute Range down toward the drainage of the Piute Wash, which runs north-to-south through the eastern half of the map. This arid basin is intersected by the prominent diagonal of the state boundary, where the corner of San Bernardino County meets the Nevada and California border. The map illustrates a contemporary view of this desert interface, primarily focusing on the natural topography and the legal boundaries that divide this federally managed wilderness from the surrounding public lands.
