About this map

The Cheesebox rises as a prominent landmark in this mid-century survey of the southeastern Utah desert. The landscape is defined by the deep incision of White Canyon and its many tributaries, including Gravel Canyon and Long Canyon. In the early 1950s, this area of San Juan County was transitioning from a remote wilderness to an active site for resource exploration. Evidence of human activity is found on Deer Flat, where a Landing Strip and a Reservoir supported local operations. Small-scale industrial efforts are also recorded, with a Prospect and a Tunnel indicating mining or exploratory work in the vicinity of Deer Canyon and Pinion Point. This preliminary survey captures the rugged topography before more detailed topographic series were standardized for the region.
