Whitewater Ranch and the Mallard Creek Ranch Airport serve as isolated outposts within this high-elevation wilderness in Idaho County. The terrain is defined by the canyon of the Salmon Wild and Scenic River, which forms the boundary between the Nez Perce National Forest to the north and the Payette National Forest to the south. Along the river corridor, various sandbars and alluvial features such as Kenmitzer Bar, Big Mallard Creek Bar, and Richardson Bar provide rare level ground in a landscape dominated by steep drainages.
