The Salmon River carves through the center of this remote Idaho wilderness, defining the boundary between the Nez Perce National Forest and the Payette National Forest. This stretch of the Salmon Wild and Scenic River is characterized by its powerful water features, including Big Mallard Rapids, Little Mallard Rapids, and Elkhorn Rapids. The landscape is a complex network of high ridges and deep drainages like Big Mallard Creek and Richardson Creek.

Riverside bars, which often represent historic sites of mining or early settlement activity in this canyon, are scattered along the banks, including Yellow Pine Bar, Richardson Bar, and Kenmitzer Bar.
