Whitewater Ranch and Mallard Creek Ranch sit at the center of this remote river corridor, serving as vital outposts within the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness. The Salmon River dominates the landscape, punctuated by treacherous white water such as Big Mallard Rapids and Little Mallard Rapids. Along its banks, several alluvial bars including Yellow Pine Bar and Kenmitzer Bar provide flat ground for river travelers and historical settlement. An Airstrip near the confluence of Big Mallard Creek and the main river highlights the area's reliance on air travel for access. This mid-1990s record also notes a single Grave near Whitewater Ranch, preserving a small but significant piece of human history in the backcountry of the Nez Perce National Forest and Payette National Forest.
