Assateague Island serves as the focal point of this coastal survey, where the border between Maryland and Virginia bisects the narrow landmass. The landscape is dominated by the protected acreage of the Assateague Island National Seashore and the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. This environment is defined by a complex network of internal waterways and marshlands, including Bounder Pond, Lone Pond, and the Middlemoor Thorofare. Small landforms such as the Pirate Islands, Twin Islands, and Pope Island are scattered along the western side of the main island, shielding internal waters like Pope Bay from the open Atlantic Ocean. The placement of these features illustrates the shifting, fragile nature of the barrier island ecosystem as it was documented in 2019.
