High volcanic plateaus and forest boundaries define this landscape north of the San Francisco Peaks, where the Coconino National Forest and Kaibab National Forest meet. The terrain is marked by significant cinder cones and peaks including Wing Mtn, Little Wing Mtn, and the Hochderffer Hills in the northeast. This 2021 survey shows a land shaped by both natural catchment and human water management, evidenced by dozens of earthen stock tanks such as Wild-Bill Tank and Hidden Hollow Tank. A segment of the historic Old Rte "66" and the modern Northside road skirt the southern boundary of Government Prairie, while a complex network of forest trails like the Wing Mountain Trl and Pipeline #1 Trl cross-cut the timberlands and open flats.
