Winona and Cosnino anchor this portion of the northern Arizona plateau, where the modern transport corridor of Interstate 40 follows the historical path of the railroad east of Flagstaff. The landscape is defined by its volcanic history and deep drainage systems, featuring the prominent Cinder Mtn and the industrial Darling Cinder Pit near the settlement of Darling. To the south, the terrain drops dramatically into the preserved archaeological and natural landscape of Walnut Canyon National Monument, surrounded by the expansive Coconino National Forest. A complex network of water management is visible through numerous named stock tanks such as Railroad Number Two Tank and Porcupine Canyon tank. The Arizona National Scenic Trail traverses the western edge of the map, cutting through the wooded uplands near Doney Park and Wildcat Hill.
