Alberton serves as the primary hub on the southwestern edge of this mountain corridor, where the Clark Fork river and the Montana Rail Link define the valley floor. Much of the surrounding landscape is managed as the Lolo National Forest, characterized by the high ridges of the Ninemile Divide and Ellis Mtn. The map documents a sparse but deliberate settlement pattern, including the locales of Ninemile and Soudan, connected by a network of forest roads such as Ninemile Rd and Remount Rd.
