The Kennebec River serves as the central artery for this part of Somerset County, where the industrial and social life of the early 1900s centered around the falls and river junctions. The twin settlements of Anson and Madison dominate the southern portion of the sheet, connected by the river and the S. R. R. rail line. Further north, the power of the water is evident at Carritunk Falls near Solon.

Away from the main river valley, the landscape is dotted with smaller agricultural and recreational hubs, from the waters of Embden Pond and Hayden Lake to the scattered crossroads of Twelve Corners and Madison Center. This survey records a period when the Carrabassett River joined the Kennebec at North Anson, supporting a network of local mills and farms. The terrain is marked by numerous family-named peaks such as Savage Hill and Parkman Hill, which define the drainage basins of Martin Stream and Fall Brook.
