Gila National Forest encompasses the high country of Sierra County, where the Animas Divide separates the watershed of Las Animas Creek from the surrounding canyons. The terrain is defined by dramatic elevation changes, rising toward the summit of Apache Peak and the lookout point at Flagpole Mtn. This landscape remains largely defined by its natural water sources, with scattered landmarks like Escondida Spring, Conley Spring, and Magnum Spring providing vital points of reference in an otherwise arid region.
