Artemas and Little Orleans anchor this landscape where the Pennsylvania and Maryland border meets the Potomac River corridor. The terrain is defined by a series of parallel ridges including Polish Mtn, Ragged Mtn, and Green Ridge, which channel water into Fifteenmile Cr and its numerous tributaries. Geologic features like White Sulphur Spring and Black Sulphur Spring indicate the mineral-rich character of the valley floors. In the southern portion of the map, the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park follows the river's bend, preserving the infrastructure of the historic transport corridor. Local history is recorded in several burial grounds, such as Mount Hope Cem, Collins Farm Cem, and Saint Patricks Cem near the Maryland-West Virginia line. This survey provides a clear view of the rural road network, from the winding Old Cumberland Rd to the prominent route of the National Pike.
