Atkins and the surrounding Smyth County landscape are shown here during a period of transition in the mid-1930s. The northern portion of the map is dominated by the Middle Fork Holston River corridor, where the Norfolk and Western Railway and the Lee Highway parallel one another through settlements like Attoway. To the south, the terrain rises into the Unaka National Forest, revealing a remote mountain economy centered on the South Fork Holston River and Sugar Grove.

Infrastructure from the New Deal era is evident at Camp Jaccard CCC No 3581, while the Appalachian Trail winds across the ridges near Dickey Knob Lookout. Local life is anchored by landmarks such as Mt Carmel Ch, Roberts Mill, and several rural schools including Nick Creek Sch.
