Grays Lake National Wildlife Refuge dominates this section of the Idaho high country, spanning the border between Bonneville and Caribou counties. The landscape is defined by the shallow waters and marshes of Grays Lake, where topographic elevations barely fluctuate across the wide basin. Rising from the water, Bear Island and the smaller Bishop Island provide distinct landmarks in an otherwise flat wetland expanse. To the west, Outlet Valley and Little Gray Ridge frame the basin, while the eastern edge is bounded by the Caribou National Forest and the rising slopes of the Caribou Range.
