Caliente and the surrounding foothill settlements of the southern Sierra Nevada transition into the San Joaquin Valley floor in this 2015 study. The landscape is defined by the winding course of Caliente Creek and Walker Basin Creek, which carve deep canyons through the uplifted terrain. Small outposts such as Bena, Ilmon, and Bealville trace the path of the regional rail and road infrastructure, highlighting the historical importance of this corridor for movement between the high desert and the agricultural heartland of the Central Valley.
