The Wasatch Range forms a dramatic backdrop for the residential expansion and rugged terrain of Summit County in this 2014 survey. High-altitude communities like Summit Park and Silver Summit are established along the southern corridor, clustered near the critical transit point of Parleys Summit. The landscape is a network of deeply carved drainages and canyons, including Little Emigration Canyon and Tollgate Canyon, which reflect the area's history of movement and passage through the mountains. To the north, the terrain remains more open and ranch-oriented, centered around the Macfarlane Ranch and the headwaters of E Canyon Cr. Named landmarks such as The Salt Box and Bitner Spring provide specific points of reference amidst the sprawling topography of Big Dutch Hollow and Porcupine Peak.
