This portion of the Blue Ridge Mountains is characterized by numerous scenic vantage points, including the Terrapin Hill Overlook and Middle Otter Creek Overlook, which provide views over the high-elevation terrain of Peavine Mountain and Miners Mountain.

Local transportation and settlement patterns are defined by the convergence of mountain ridges and watercourses. Small hamlets like Waugh and Naola sit at critical junctions, while historical river access is preserved in the naming of Waughs Ferry Rd.
