Leonard Creek Ranch and Cappallo Camp stand as the primary human outposts in this arid high-desert corridor of Humboldt County. The landscape is dominated by the Pine Forest Range and several prominent high points, most notably Bishop Peak and Sentinel Peak. Water management in this dry environment is evident through the presence of the Sentinel Peak Reservoir and Plateau Reservoir, which capture runoff from the various seasonal drainages. The topography is defined by sharp elevation changes between flat landforms like The Mesa and deep cuts such as New York Canyon and Buckaroo Canyon. The drainage network, including Snow Creek and Leonard Creek, dictates the placement of the few roads and ranching improvements found within these desert basins.
