Cloverdale sits at the heart of this high-desert landscape in the southwestern corner of New Mexico, situated near the transition between the Peloncillo Mountains and the Guadalupe Mountains. Much of the territory is managed as part of the Coronado National Forest, where the topography is defined by high points like Kilmer Peak and the namesake Black Point. The presence of several established cattle operations, including Pendleton Ranch, Eicks Ranch, and Robertson Ranch, reflects the enduring ranching economy of Hidalgo County.
