About this map

Craters of the Moon National Preserve occupies the southeastern corner of this mountainous Idaho landscape, where the high desert terrain meets the volcanic formations of the Snake River Plain. The drainage patterns of the Pioneer Mountains are clearly defined, showing the descent of Lava Creek and Cottonwood Creek in the north toward the expansive flats below. Central to the topography is the prominent Barn Canyon, which carves through the central ridges toward the southern basin.
