McPhee Reservoir dominates the western edge of this Colorado landscape, where a sophisticated network of small-scale water management defines the high country. In this 2011 survey, the terrain is characterized by dozens of named reservoirs—such as Spur Reservoir, Railroad Reservoir, and Phoneline Reservoir—that supported the region's livestock and timber industries. Evidence of historic industrial activity is visible at Rusts Sawmill, located near Bean Reservoir.
