Sally's Camp and Wild Horse Cow Camp mark the upper reaches of this Modoc County high-desert landscape, reflecting the region's enduring ranching and seasonal work patterns. The terrain is defined by wide expanses like Boles Meadow and the prominent Mowitz Butte, where water management is central to the land's utility. A network of catchments and drainage features, including the Surveyors Valley Reservoir, Deadhorse Flat Reservoir, and Mowitz Butte Tank, supports the area's arid character. These features, along with Mowitz Cr and the curiously named Gas Drum Flat, are connected by an extensive system of Forest Service routes, such as 46n10 RD and 44n40 RD, which reveal the infrastructure of this working landscape in the early 21st century.
